The field survey was conducted by staff and students of the Archaeology Department of the University of Glasgow under the direction of Alex Morrison. The survey involved walking over the manor from the tailspin to its uttermost inland boundaries. Known sites were checked and planned and many new sites were discovered, particularly in areas which have not been regarded as suitable for threshing or settlement in recent times.The sites presented here range from neolithic to post-medieval periods and have been selected to illustrate the length of human settlement of Dunbeath Strath, but moreover to reflect the true nature of the archaeological record: Dunbeath has some impressive monuments, but often the most significant sites are not necessarily the most spectacular.1.
